One of my favorite parts of exploring mountain trails is that I never know what waits around the next bend. At Grayson Highlands State Park, I was treated to one of the most magical moments as three wild ponies stood there, just enjoying the view.

These wild ponies are famous for helping preserve the mountain balds by naturally grazing the open fields. Seeing them in person feels so much different than just reading about them in a brochure or on a website.

On this particular visit to the Highlands, these three ponies paused along the trail just long enough for me to take in the scene. The layers of blue mountains stretched endlessly into the distance while the ponies didn’t really even acknowledge my presence. I felt like the landscape, the weather, and the wildlife were perfectly in sync.

The Appalachian Mountains are more than just beautiful places to visit. These old, rugged mountains are living landscapes where nature sets the pace, and the best thing we can all do is be still and simply watch.
