Some moments in nature happen so quickly they're gone before you can lift a camera.
Others give you the rare gift of simply being present.
Along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Western North Carolina, I spent forty-five unforgettable minutes with a wild black bear as it foraged and grazed at the side of the parkway. It dug through the earth in search of food, paused to scratch an itch, sniffed the summer air, and occasionally looked directly at me with curiosity. Honestly…I was curious too!
Cars slowed to a stop. Complete strangers watched together in silence, choosing the moment over the road ahead.
No one rushed the experience. No one wanted it to end.
It was my first truly extended encounter with a wild bear and my first opportunity to photograph one while learning to use my new camera.
I captured more than 1,000 images while sitting there in awe. I knew that not every photograph was going to be perfect. I just simply didn’t want to miss a single moment of the story unfolding before me.
This collection isn't just about a bear to me.
It's about patience, wonder, and respect for wild places. It’s giving our wildlife the respect they deserve while viewing them from a safe distance and not engaging in a way that endangers their lives, now or in the future.
It’s a reminder that sometimes the greatest gift nature offers isn't the photograph we bring home; it’s about the privilege of being there at all.

The Moment Our Eyes Met
Curiosity Replaced Caution
At first, every movement I made was measured.
The distance between us remained constant, each of us quietly assessing the other.
Watching quietly out of the sunroof of the car with my camera in my hand, the bear looked up, down, and all around, noticing me as I noticed it.
Then something shifted.
The tension eased. Its face softened.
Caution was replaced with natural curiosity.
A Moment’s Pause
For just a moment, everything became still. The people watching from their cars were silent. No one moved.
Before taking another step, the bear paused, as if making a final assessment.
Drawn by the Breeze
The moment of curiosity didn't last long.
Satisfied with whatever conclusion it had reached, the bear's attention slowly drifted away from all of those watching, waiting, and taking in the moment.
Its nose lifted toward the mountain air, taking in scents carried on the evening breeze.
For the first time since the encounter began, those watching were no longer at the center of its attention.
